Quiet green spaces

Posted: 08 Oct 2014 08:08 AM PDT

Berlin is a lively city with non-stop partying especially when the weekend approaches but throughout the city, there are pockets of green spaces everywhere to escape to if needed.

One of my favourite spots in the city is Treptower Park in Treptow-Köpenick district of South Berlin. It houses a Soviet War Memorial built to commemorate the deaths of Soviet Soldiers in World War II. The massive statue of a Soviet soldier stands tall in the park, surrounded by a vast expanse of space and stone sarcophagi running parallel down either side of the memorial area.

The park itself is massive and there are other activities to do there like cycling, paddle boat and there's also an observatory.
It's perfect to go there for a day to enjoy some peace, bask in the sun and forget you're in the city.

Blood Moon over Los Angeles

Posted: 08 Oct 2014 05:38 AM PDT

As the earth's shadow floated over the moon, a blood red hue set in. There were already several photographers training their lenses on the celestial event. I took this through the denuded branches of a tree, using a flash to illuminate the tree limbs.

Harvest moon eclipse 2014

Posted: 08 Oct 2014 05:27 AM PDT

The Harvest Moon rose big and beautiful early in the evening, but wispy clouds threatened the main event to come. Despite the ubiquitous fog rolling in over San Francisco Bay during the early morning hours, the sky cleared for a time during totality and the eclipse could be clearly seen from here on Bay Farm Island.

Blood Moon

What at beautiful morning here in the Midwest. No wind, starry skies and 45 degrees. It is 4:45 CST now and the moon is about half visible. 5:06 am and the moon is only 1/4 visible. 5:30 am and the moon is no longer visible. 6:15 am. The darkness and still of the night is now being broken with the sound of geese on a neighbors pond. 6:51 am now. moon is about half visible and sun is starting to rise. 7:20 am moon is almost full now and is setting into a cloud bank on the western horizon. Off to work. Have a great day.

While this one had a much shorter viewing cycle for Chicagoans, it was certainly worth the early-up this morning.

Got up before the crack of dawn to get this shot. Luckily, there was a break in the low level clouds, and the moon just sat perfectly.

What a beauty. The pics are a bit blurry, maybe because of the humidity in the air. We are located in the high desert North of Palm Springs, California.

Beautiful Berlin

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 04:51 PM PDT

I visited Berlin in September 2010 for work, and my favorite thing to do there was to sit in the shadow of the Brandenburg Gate, watching all the people go by. It was such a symbol of reconciliation and restoration, and I caught this really great shot of it, at sunset, with an ice cream man sitting right at the center base of it....what contrast and symbolism! No one imagined 30 years ago that we'd all be walking in an out of this gate, enjoying the day, eating ice cream. What a feeling! There's hope for all nations to mend....it just takes time, but there's always hope...that's what this piece of the city represents to me.

Picture 3: Standing where the Berlin Wall used to be, just in front of the Brandenburg Gate

The struggle for Berlin

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 07:54 AM PDT

Berlin is the city of the contemporary history, the one we've grown up with. Here history is not something far and old, but something vivid and still in the air, everything all around here has influenced our lifes.
The Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park is not only a retorical symbol of power, but also and maybe especially the symbol of the people that have struggled to let us born free, although the Cold War has then changed and put this aspect of the history in the shadows.
The Soviet War Memorial is a vast war memorial and military cemetery in Berlin, built to commemorate 5,000 of the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin during the Second World War.
This year is the 25th Anniversary of Die Wende, but it's also the 20th Anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet Western Group of Forces, which occupied Germany from 1945 until the fall of 1994; it took more than 3 years to move half million people back to the ex-Soviet Union.
