Outbreak in Yoyogi Park after dengue-carrying mosquitoes found.

Posted: 06 Sep 2014 04:43 AM PDT

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government closed most of Yoyogi Park on Thursday after confirming that mosquitoes caught in traps earlier this week were carrying the dengue virus, metropolitan officials said.

The discovery confirmed the park as the site of infections for dozens of people over the past several weeks. Four traps out of the 10 placed by metropolitan officials contained mosquitoes carrying the virus, the officials said.

The number of patients has risen to 49 since last week in the first domestic outbreak of dengue fever since 1945, according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry.

Puffins !! from Russia

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 11:48 PM PDT

As we made our way by expedition ship down the Kamchatka peninsula we encountered a group of Puffins.

Puffins are any of three small species of alcids (auks) in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak during the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean.

All puffin species have predominantly black or black and white plumage, a stocky build, and large beaks. They shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute)[1] in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface.

The puffins are stocky, short-winged and short-tailed birds, with black upper parts and white or brownish-grey underparts. The head has a black cap, the face is mainly white, and the feet are orange-red. The bill appears large and colourful during the breeding season. The colourful outer part of the bill is shed after the breeding season, revealing a smaller and duller true bill beneath.[10]

Although the puffins are vocal at their breeding colonies, they are silent at sea. They fly relatively high above the water, typically 10 m (33 ft) as compared with the 1.6 m (5.2 ft) of other auks.[11]

Walmart oil change gone wrong!!

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 05:28 PM PDT

On August 31st of 2014 I went in for a routine oil change at a local walmart it was a hot summer day. After paying and getting my keys from the tech walking away from my car I got in and drove off.

About 5 minutes in my drive when I merged onto the highway as I picked up speed between 55 to 60 with out notice my hood lifted and caught the wind and crashed into my windshield. I tried to check my rear mirror but couldn't it was hanging. I had to use my side mirrors just to make sure I wouldn't  hurt or kill anyone while getting in the service lane. This was so unexpected and frightening.

I immediately was panicked but I took out my phone and took photos and video. I may have not had the best choice words but who would I could have died.

I called the walmart they forgot to latch my hood shut they hung up so I went to my trunk cut my amplifier wire and tied my hood closed and made the short trip back. No refund was given only a claim and a free tow.

Channel 8 news WFAA  covered this story shortly after. I have not seen any result of this claim as of yet actually it has been very hard with it being my only car. Thank god my 4 year old was not with me.

Water Splashes Over Flood Gates of Big Dam

Posted: 04 Sep 2014 10:27 PM PDT

Along the Menominee River that divides Wisconsin and Michigan is the Big Hydraulic Falls dam. After a flash flood warning I came to see what the water flow was like. I was surprised to see water lapping over the top of it.

My memories of Joan from Judi Faye

Posted: 04 Sep 2014 09:29 PM PDT

I worked with Joan in 1985 on her show. From the first show we did Joan was always giving and I just loved working with her. Last year I was asked if I wanted to play a Psychic on Fashion Police. It was like the years never passed and we just picked up where we left off. She was one of the most giving people on and off stage.
She will be missed. Rest in peace.

Russian Walrus- Kamchatka Penninsula

Posted: 04 Sep 2014 02:05 PM PDT

On a barren beach in Kamchatka, Russia we boarded our zodiacs in search of Walrus. The temperature was 40 degrees, a brisk wind whipped out of the north and the rain relentlessly pounded us. After 30 minutes we spotted a haul out of about 500 Walrus. Our Russian handlers kept watch as we inched closer and closer to the the group. Heads bopped in and out of the water wondering who we are and why we were there. After an hour we returned to our expendition ship and continued our journey.
