Town Brook in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Barely a mighty river, but great in the importance of reversing a declining herring population.

Mothers Around the World

Posted: 06 Aug 2014 07:20 AM PDT

One of the most fascinating observable aspects of any culture are visible expressions of human bonds that people around the world could relate to – connections between friends, couples, mothers and children.

Those connections and relationships nurture, shape, build us up and break us down more than any other forces life applies in its sculpturing process. Our bonds with our mothers is the first carving of our personalities that takes place.

Mother is a mother in India, Cambodia, Peru, Thailand, Nepal, Israel or Ukraine. What it's like to be a mother differs greatly, but what it feels to be a mother might cross the borders without needing any translation. How does she look at her child, how does she care for him? Is there warmth or distance, delight or indifference, care or neglect, love or contempt, protection or abuse, shared joy or shared sorrow, passing on hope or hopelessness.

Photographing mothers with children I find myself hungry for a "happy narrative" – whatever the environment is (poor or prosperous, beautiful or dirty) – I so wish to see kids loved and protected! Unfortunately not all narratives look happy. My slice of a story is 1/100 of a second of shutter click, but there is so much you can "see", imagine outside of the frame – the woman's past, her child's future…

Same-Sex Marriage Rally in Cincinnati, Ohio

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 06:50 PM PDT

On Wednesday, August 6, the US Court of Appeals 6th Circuit will hear arguments regarding same-gender marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. In support of marriage equality, Why Marriage Matters Ohio hosted a rally in Lytle Park in downtown Cincinnati. There were more than a few hundred supporters who came to show their support. Speakers for the event included James Obergefell (who won his case to be named on his husband's death certificate), Cincinnati's openly gay City Council member Chris Seelbach, Ohio State House of Representative's open and courageous lesbian Nickie Antonio, and former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland.

Many state and local news outlets covered the rally. By my count, there were only two counter protesters who remained quiet and peaceful as the pro-equality crowd passed them by. The police presence was notable in and around the park. Attendees of the rally were from Cincinnati and the surrounding areas.

The rally was upbeat and fun. It mixed speakers and music. Some of the plaintiffs from the Ohio and Kentucky cases took to the stage to thank the crowd for the support they have received. Directors from Equality Ohio and Equality Michigan revved up the crowd and a group of supportive clergy spoke about the love in religion.

Another rally is being hosted by Freedom to Marry Ohio at Fountain Square in Cincinnati on Wednesday as the hearings are happening. These hearings are being reported as some of the biggest marriage equality events since DOMA was partially struck down in 2013. It's only a matter of time before marriage equality is back in front of the Supreme Court for another win!!

Low´s Peak (4095.2 m), Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 12:45 PM PDT

February 2011 I did the 3 day trek to the summit Low´s Peak (4095.2 m) of Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia. We started at 7 am and when we arrived at the guest house which was located at ca. 3000 m, it was dark. We had been trekking 10 hours. After midnight, at 2 am we made our way to the summit. We had to start that early in order to be in time for the sunrise which was the main reason for the whole effort. It was cold, tricky and dark. But we made it and yes, watching the sun rise from the peak - it was one of the best moments of my life.

Hot air balloon flight over Tuscany

Posted: 05 Aug 2014 11:22 AM PDT

Early in the morning in Tuscany, just before sunrise we went on a hot air balloon flight. It was a misty morning and since this was my first hot air balloon flight I didn't imagine we would have great views.
To my surprise we ascended to about 700 ft, above the clouds and there it was this magical view of Tuscany's landscape.
