Principal gives update from historic downtown Napa school

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 11:24 PM PDT

I live and work in Napa, California. At home, we experienced a chaotic loss of all our dinnerware, glasses, and other minor material goods. It was a long, scary early morning with no electricity. I am Principal of St. John the Baptist Catholic school located on Main street in downtown Napa. Our building is historical, built in 1927. We recently completed a two-stage seismic retrofit so we do not seem to have structural damage. Our cosmetic damage, however, is dramatic. Cracked, crumbled plaster is everywhere. The classroom floors are lined with books, materials, overturned desks and chairs. We haven't yet begun the clean-up process because we want approval to enter from our structural engineer. School is canceled for tomorrow. Our school has survived through two world wars and a great depression...we'll get through this!

Napa earthquake

Posted: 24 Aug 2014 12:06 PM PDT

The wine country was awaken by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake early this morning.
Congressman Mike Thompson was in the area and surveyed the damage by walking throughout downtown Napa this morning.
Several buildings including the court building suffered structural damage.
There are reports of two mobile homes being destroyed by earthquake related fire.
Firemen arrived at the fire scene but water pipe lines were broken and could not access water to abate the fire.
No casualties are reported yet and city and government officials are still assessing the damages.
Governor Brown declared the area a state of emergency.
Many businesses suffered shuttered glass and many of their owners were already doing clean up work.
The rest of the area is out and about doing business as usual.
At Ceja's wine tasting room; a statue of the god of wine lied helplessly on the floor.
