HABOOB in Southern California Desert

Posted: 21 Aug 2014 11:28 PM PDT

We have been having Much Needed rain and some great storm clouds this week. Sitting on the patio today about 4pm we noticed off to the South of us there was what appeared to be a storm approaching. We watched as it appeared to arrive over the mountains of Joshua Tree National Park to the South of town. What we soon noticed to be different about this approaching storm was it was 'brown'. We are up on the mountain on the NW side of town & watched it slowly cover everything as it rolled North. I kept taking photos of the movement & said to my husband 'hey maybe it's a HABOOB".
It eventually covered everything from south to north in town & arrived at our home. It was stinky and I knew it was not a normal storm cloud.
I was just watching the local Channel 3 News and sure enough, it was a HABOOB that had come up over the mountain (about 20 miles)  from down below in Palm Springs and surrounding areas. Our Chief Weather Lady, Ginger reported winds over 40 mph in and around Palm Springs, Indio and other lower desert cities. There were trees blown down in several areas also.
Our deserts have wind storms on a regular basis but I don't personally ever remember a HABOOB in our desert.
This has been an unusual summer with more than normal humidity and Monsoon Rains. The rain storms this week in the Palm Springs & surrounding areas to the south, have brought more rain than usually falls in a year.
I don't know if there was any damage 'up the mountain' here in Joshua Tree or the South side of Yucca Valley. When it arrived at our home it had broken up & settled like a fog over town, with only light wind.
Crazy Summer!
