Splitting Hairs Gets Right Decision

Splitting Hairs Gets Right Decision

Splitting Hairs Gets Right Decision

This  morning the US Supreme Court ruled that Hobby Lobby did not have to pay  for certain contraceptives which the corporation believed was in  conflict with its religious belief that abortion is wrong. The 5-4  ruling was narrow in scope and limited to "closely held" corporations.

The  debate now is what "closely held" means and whether a strict Internal  Revenue Service definition or whether more specific. Hobby Lobby is not  publicly traded and is owned by one family.

I  believe the Supremes ruled appropriately by limiting its ruling. The  Court did not confer additional "people" status to Hobby Lobby or any  other corporation. What the Court did was look at the structure of Hobby  Lobby's ownership and determined that the owners' religious rights were  being violated.

The Court did not open a floodgate for all businesses to rebel against the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act.

The  Court insured that only those businesses, such as Hobby Lobby, which  are explicitly privately owned by those with religious belief could not  be forced to pay for objectionable contraceptive insurance. Those  corporations and businesses publicly traded cannot make the same claims.

Family  businesses cannot suddenly "get religion" and object. I believe it must  be a clear case that religious principals are evident and have been  evident from the inception of the business and corporation as is the  case with Hobby Lobby.

From the Cornfield, I applaud the Supreme Court for splitting hairs to get to the right decision.

World Cup Sand Sculpting Championship

Posted: 30 Jun 2014 05:22 AM PDT

Every year, Atlantic City hosts the World Championship of Sand Sculpting and this year, I finally got to see it in person. Photos don't do it justice. This is AMAZING temporary art. It's too bad they can't be permanent. It is so hard to pick a favorite because they are all so beautiful. You can tell lots of love and effort went into making these sculptures. This exhibit is open every day through July 7th on the beach in Atlantic City.

This year's Gay Pride Parade celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots which launched the modern gay right movement in 1969.

More than 1 million people lined the parade route which kicked off on 5th Avenue and 36th street and ended in the West Village-Greenwich and Christopher street.
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo marched in this year's parade.

Miss Yosemite Valley crowned Miss California 2014

Posted: 29 Jun 2014 01:09 PM PDT

Marina Inserra, Miss Yosemite Valley was crowned Miss California 2014 during the 90th anniversary of the Miss California Pageant in Fresno, California.

Throughout the week there were pageant talent rehearsals and competitions for the various categories.

Throughout the evening, the Miss America pageant system, promoted as the largest scholarship program in the world for women. Soon after the intro, the top 15 winners were announced followed by a showcase of finalists gradually being eliminated in categories of swimsuit (noted as physique during the pageant evening), evening gown, talent and interview.
Previously I remembered the swimsuit competition having what looked like a stage of models which was now transformed into what looked like a physique contest at Muscle Beach in Venice.

Joining the contestants on stage were Miss America, Miss Teens, Little Princesses and former Miss Californias performing dance and musical routines. The most enjoyable and funniest sequence by far for the evening was Miss California 2013 Crystal Lee and several other former Miss Californias performing a Black Swan parody ballet sequence.

Contestants were encouraged to be the best they could be. All on stage were winners and had benefitted by competing and winning scholarships as their stepping stone to a successful life.
