Hi , decided to hold off on mowing my grass today and decided to see how far I could get with this snow man..My wifes flowers made the eyes. Only in the good ol USA, is it possible to do this in the middle of May. I live about 50 miles west of the Windy city, I took this on May 16th 2014.

First light over Island 67

Posted: 16 May 2014 07:58 AM PDT

As I stood looking out at the river, enjoying the first warmth of the rising sun, watching the water ripple as my island parted it on its journey to the sea, the view was positively priceless. Island 67 is seventeen river miles south of Clarksdale, Miss., in the middle of the Mississippi River. I had made camp on the island the night before. This shot was taken at first light facing south. So what you see is the southern tip of Island 67 in the foreground, the Mississippi Delta on the left side of the river and a small piece of Arkansas on the right.

'Without that aerial assault ... this whole community is gone'

DC 10 dropping fire retardant near my house to create a fire break between our development and Cal State San Marcos.  That dropped happened off Twin Oaks Valley & Village Dr which is about 1/4 Mile from the University and the surrounding brush and some structures were already burning in my neighborhood.

'The flames were at my back door'

That dropped happened off Twin Oaks Valley & Village Dr which is about 1/4 Mile from the University and the surrounding brush and some structures were already burning in my neighborhood.

The flames were at my back door. The burn line comes up to our development's walls. Some of the fences and patio furniture burned, but the structures were saved.

I lived in this same area when the 2007 Firestorm that destroyed San Diego...and it happened much as it did in 2007. The biggest difference were the number of crews and the overwhelming aerial support. There is no doubt that without that aerial assault and assets, this whole community is gone. That is by far the biggest difference between 2007 and this weeks events.

'Fires breaking out simultaneously'

Posted: 15 May 2014 09:10 PM PDT

Cocos Fire:  I reside in San Marcos, Ca just outside of the evacuation zone for the so named Cocos fire. I decided to hike up early this morning to a vantage point where I could assess the damage and ongoing flames. In the aeriaI I was on a hilltop just behind Palomar College in San Marcos looking south.  I observed the fire for a couple of hours watching the fire and hotspots spread to the north and northwest behind Cal State San Marcos.  The fire was spreading in multiple directions making containment challenging.  I then drove around the city observing the carnage from various perspectives. I attempted to get close to the fire line, however access was limited.  I must give kuddos to local law enforcement for overseeing the evacuated neighborhoods.  I was able to reach a location where I could observe air drops of fire retardent.  Concerned homeowners looked on helplessly as they hoped their home be spared.  By 10:30 a.m. the temperature was already 103, the fire had just flared up and the city braced for another grueling battle with nature.   The winds shifted in the afternoon sending the blaze in an eastern direction cuasing evacuations around the west Escondido perimeter.  I am just outside the evacuation zone while several friends and family are currently evacuated as they anxiously await the approval to return to their homes.  The fires have shown just how tight of a community all of San Diego county really is.  Social media is providing an outlet for those who are stranded to obtain much needed medicine and help transporting animals and the like.  There is smoke regardless of which direction you look due to 9 fires that have occurred in a 2 day period in San Diego county. Fire season doesn't start until September/October.  It's frightening to think of this as a dress rehearsal.  Prayers and support go out to those affected and to the brave fire fighters who are doing their best to mitigate structure loss. If you are told to evacuate, please do so. Check with Cal Fire for the latest updates: http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current

My Questions for Steve Swanson

Steve, what do you think is the biggest accomplishment that you had done so far in being an astronaut? What specific goal would you like to achieve before you retire from doing space travel?

Tonight people gathered in Beşiktaş here in Istanbul to show their support for the miners of Soma and their families. The banner on the right shows young men who were killed during the protests of last summer. This has essentially been transformed into their plaza. The tragedy has already claimed almost 300 lives.
