Scenes from the Indian elections 2014

Posted: 17 May 2014 05:23 AM PDT

On May 16th, after the landslide win for the right-wing BJP party across several states, there were celebrations held through the day in smaller party offices. I watched this crowd dance their way down 100 ft road in Indiranagar, Bangalore, where I live and work.

Pagsanjan Falls, Philippines

Posted: 17 May 2014 01:12 AM PDT

Declared a National Park in 1939 and reconfirmed in 1976, this beautiful but seemingly clandestine spot, Pagsanjan Gorge and Falls, has been a perennial favorite among the tourist spots in the Philippines. The gorge itself boasts of breathtaking scenes--viewed from a unique canoe ride, with the vessel taken upstream by fleet footed men. But wait until you see where the high point of the trip: a magnificent view of the waterfalls. There is a raft available that takes the visitors to the "Devil's Cave," the hollow right behind the falls, but, of course, with the experience of having to pass under the cascade and the water pounding against your head and body.

Ein Avdat, Israel

Posted: 17 May 2014 12:36 AM PDT

Ein Avdat is a canyon located at the Negev Desert south of Israel. The State has designated it as a National Park. If the formation of the canyon is enough to enthral the visitors as their vehicle descends to the jump-off point in the valley, wait until they see what the place offers--sightings of ibexes (photo 2), lush corners and rock clefts, pools of water and an easy and inviting trail. The trail which I followed with a group was an ascent to a plateau that revealed ruins of ancient Nabatean structures.

The result of the Indian elections 2014 - What could it mean for women?

Posted: 17 May 2014 12:20 AM PDT

So the result of the Indian elections has been talked about intensely in the media and among all the people here . As many of you already know, the Indian right-wing parties have won a landslide victory. While a lot of people are discussing economic growth, corruption and other pressing social challenges, it is a little disheartening to see that this may mean that gender rights — especially the rights of women — may be overlooked.

Women's rights have been the focus in many areas of public debate given the number of sexual violence, harassment and domestic abuse cases highlighted in the media but laws that are in place are seldom implemented because it is still not seen as s serious human rights issue. Will the new government change this? Honestly I don't know. Will the new government make it worse? I have fears that the conservative wave that is sweeping india at the moment is going to make it a lot tougher for us to access rights.

These are the real heroes

Posted: 16 May 2014 03:52 PM PDT

On Wednesday morning, May 14, 2014, a fast-moving fire ignited just east of the Aviara residential area in Carlsbad, CA.  Fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds and unseasonably warm temperatures, the fire moved rapidly to the west, scorching over 400 acres, but sparing hundreds of houses, two schools, and numerous commercial buildings.  Its no accident that these structures were saved - the community owes A HUGE THANK YOU to these brave men and women who worked for over 48 hours in near 100 degree heat and strong unpredictable winds, inhumane conditions, to preserve our community. They only rested when they couldn't go on.  Thanks to these amazing firefighters, nearly all homes in the community are intact following the Carlsbad Poinsettia Fire.  Its truly a miracle, for which we are all extremely grateful.

San Diego has had horrible fires the past 3 days with sweltering heat. As a by-product of the smoke we have also had stunning multi colored sunsets...these photos were taken the past two evenings at the Ocean Beach Pier. The Ocean Beach Pier is 5 miles from San Diego...

'The fire spread rapidly'

Posted: 16 May 2014 08:01 AM PDT

We were evacuated from work office in Carlsbad on Wednesday May 14th when the fires first started. By the time we made it home to Coronado Hills, that area was evacuated too. The work the fire fighters do is tireless, brave and the ultimate expression of community. Although many homes were lost, everyone owes these men and women a debt of gratitude.

The first few photos are the beginning of the Carlsbad fire followed by photos of the Coco's fire as it began to consume Coronado Hills. Last photo is Cal State San Marcos surrounded by the burn.
