Lunar Eclipse over Iowa

Taken using a Canon 300mm lens, ISO200, 4 second exposure at f8. As expected, had a difficult time getting the exposure, without bad motion blur. Didn't have a telescope.

The first lunar eclipse of 2014

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 02:41 AM PDT

The first lunar eclipse of the year falls on the tax day. The bright star in the photo to the lower right of the moon is Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo.

The next lunar eclipse will be on October 8, visible from almost the entire United States including Alaska and Hawaii, except for places in the extreme Northeast.

Blood Moon

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 02:16 AM PDT

I woke up at 11:00PM Pacific to a light cloud cover in Truckee,CA. Unsure if the clouds would thicken I drove to near by Donner Pass. I new a few trees that I thought I could include as foreground in an image. Once I found a tree that had a nice fit with the moon I set up and began getting an exposure dialed in. As the Eclipse continued to progress the clouds thinned out almost completely leaving just a light water vapor in the air. This helped give the moon a nice softer glow. Shot with a Nikon D800 and Sigma 300f2.8 with 2x converter, ISO 4000 f4.

'Blood Moon' over Napa Valley.

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 02:10 AM PDT

The 'Blood Moon' view from the heart of the Napa Valley was spectacular... she settled in after an evening that began hiding behind a thick series of rolling clouds and ozone layer. By the time I got home after work, she was free-and-clear of any obtrusive obstacles that my camera, Sofie, couldn't handle. I decided that since I was working with a 70-200 on my DSLR, that an image stack would work best for my taste. This image is comprised of 6 separate photos merged in Photoshop... enjoy!

Blood Moon over SLC Utah

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 01:06 AM PDT

After my brothers hounded me through texts at 1am to wake up and take a photo of the eclipse, I finally gave in and dusted off the telescope sitting in the closet. I attached my camera using a special ring and snapped a photo. This is what the Blood Moon looked like over SLC Utah. The photo above was taken at 1:38 am MST, not too long after the full shadow was upon the moon.
