I Will Stand And Fight With Ukranians

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 08:05 AM PST

I'm an American in Ukraine. I can tell you that what the Russian media is saying about terrorists and Pro-Fascist Government is all lies. Innocent protestors, mostly young people, and even Red Cross volunteers were cut down by sniper fire and the Ex-President Yanukovych let this happen and apparently documents found in his home prove he was going to use force. Now Russia is protecting Yanukovych. Russia is using every excuse in the book to invade the Ukraine from protecting its citizens. From what is Russia protecting its citizens from? No one in Ukraine is threatening Russian people or its citizens. In fact there are a lot of Russians here on our side. Ukrainian men are volunteering for the army, young and old, healthy or injured. As an American here, I have but two options and everyone is telling me I should leave and go home to be safe. I refuse to leave here now and even though I cannot volunteer legally to join Ukraine army, I can join those who are at Maidan. This is my second option and I am likely to take it. If my country will sit idly by and let this happen, there is one American who wont. We know we are facing a threat we cannot win. The Russians will slaughter us, but I believe in what Ukrainians believe. We will not go down without a fight. I will not abandon my Ukrainian brothers and sisters who only want the right to choose their own future and live in a free country. How can I not stand with them? As an American I would probably never face such a threat in my own country. I can't tell you how it feels to know that an invasion by Russia could happen at any moment, any day, or any hour. I can feel the tension in the air. It is not a pleasant thing to go to sleep and wonder if you will wake up to the sound of helicopter gunships flying over your city and an invasion force is on its way. I hope the world will pray and that someone won't let the Russians invade this country. But if they do, there will be a fight.

St. Patrick’s Day Comes Early to Rockaway, NY

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 05:03 AM PST

Just as New Hampshire holds the nation's first presidential primary, Rockaway in New York's borough of Queens holds what is most likely the country's first St. Patrick's Day parade. Today, and on the first Saturday of every March, ambulance corps, scout troops, high school marching bands, Irish organizations, bagpipe bands, and fire departments from as far away as Millville, Delaware descend on this small beachfront community to celebrate their heritage.

This section of Rockaway is home to a large number of people of Irish descent and is comprised of towns that include Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park, and Neponsit. It also includes Breezy Point, which was devastated by fire and flood during Hurricane Sandy and which has the second highest Irish population per capita in the U.S.

While the number of marchers may have eclipsed totals from past parades and throngs of enthusiastic onlookers again lined both sides of Newport Avenue, this 39th staging of the event was decidedly less politically charged than last year's parade. In 2013 the New York mayoral race was in full swing and wide open and many of the candidates put in appearances. Most notable was former mayor Michael Bloomberg who was lustily booed by residents who felt the city had given them short shrift following the hurricane. In addition, this parade was not under fire from LGBT groups as the Manhattan parade has been, as a result of the organizers banning these groups from marching.

A brilliant sun shone down on the marchers today, but with mother nature poised to dump another 4"-8" of snow on the area tomorrow, many had been hoping the parade would hasten the arrival of spring.

Girls Day Celebrations in Japan

Posted: 02 Mar 2014 12:21 AM PST

In Japan, Girls Day is celebrated on March 3rd. On the special day many dolls are placed on platforms which are placed atop a red carpet. Today, while visiting Ryougoku in Tokyo, I caught a glimpse of this extra long red carpet. At the end of the carpet there were 16 platforms of dolls laid out. Usually the 7th platform marks the bottom! So it was extra lucky to see this extra large display inside Ryougoku Station.

Ukraine needs your help!

Posted: 01 Mar 2014 01:03 PM PST

Today Russian Federation Council approved Putin's request to start military intervention in Ukraine. Eighty-seven Parliament members voted approval as one and then greeted that decision with standing ovation! How cynical and sick is this? To cheer the beginning of war!

What did we do to deserve this military invasion? We didn't kill a single Russian soldier, we didn't take over any of their resources or land. We just had a week as a free country! And this was enough for Russia to announce war with unanimous vote! What they hate us for? For freedom? For different thinking? What justifies the war against Ukraine in the eyes of Russians on March 1, 2014?

Ukrainians compare Putin's official explanation for military invasion (protection of Russians in Crimea) with Hitler's speech on Feb 20, 1938, where he announced that Reich will defend the rights of Germans in neighboring countries who were unable to protect their political and spiritual freedom. That Hitler's speech was a signal of beginning of World War II.

In 1994 Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons. Russia, US and UK became guarantors of independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Now that Russia is attacking, US and EU are merely expressing concerns. Ukrainians are beginning to think that they will be left alone to deal with crazy Putin who seems to believe that he is above any international laws and agreements. As of now, Putin refuses to participate in any international diplomatic negotiations regarding Ukraine.

People in Ukraine are very concerned, scared - war has not been a part of reality of the lives of our generation. In Kiev we are still recovering from shock of 100 deaths last week during protests and now we are seeing in our nightmares a possibility of hundreds of casualties in military conflict! Our friends are in panic in southern and eastern regions where Russian troops are advancing on Ukrainian ground – even without official announcement of war. The analysts are saying that Putin's plans are not just Crimea, but taking over Kiev. Tonight men in Kiev are lining up near military offices volunteering to be drafted. How can we go to bed today knowing that tomorrow we will wake up to see Russian tanks on our streets?! Ukraine is Europe and it's 2014!!!

Many Ukrainians are saying, "If Putin takes such extreme measures, it means he is losing (lost) all the power leverage in Ukraine. It means we are on the right path of freedom. We only need to stand against one more very heavy blow. We will have to take it alone. We might not get any help from anybody. But Putin might break his neck over Ukraine".

We do hope we don't need to face this threat alone. We are asking international community to come to help, to stop this evil! You might be thinking that Ukraine is not that important, it's not that strategic, it's not worth getting into messy disagreement with Putin. But every time the world allows this monster to feed on another country, to annex another area from an independent state (Moldova, Georgia, now Ukraine), you are allowing this monster to grow. You think Putin is too far from your country? Maybe in 1938 a lot of people felt that Hitler was far away from them too.

Indonesia's Litter Beach

Posted: 28 Feb 2014 10:21 PM PST

These are photos of the rubbish littering Bali's Kuta Beach in Indonesia.

Neighbouring island villagers dump their rubbish in rivers and streams, when the monsoon rains arrive the rivers are flushed out, the rubbish then drifts in the sea, disasterous to marine life. Tides bring the rubbish to the shores of the tourist island of Bali.
