Spring cleaning!

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 08:48 AM PST

It's Friday but it felt like weekend. In the morning Independence Square was full of people and by mid-day it got packed. People came to help in any way they could: cleaning the streets from remains of burned tires, rebuilding barricades, making and serving sandwiches, encouraging each other. This sunny day felt like spring cleaning, like taking care of our home together! As people joined to bring order to the streets you could see on their inspired faces that they were already dreaming of working as hard together on building in Ukraine a new civilization based on values such as faith, solidarity, dignity, respect for an individual and clear and equal rules of the game for all!

Build A World Where There Is No Gender Discrimination Nor Male Chauvinism

Posted: 21 Feb 2014 07:23 AM PST

I have 2 kids and both of them are girls, My older daughter, Beatrice Pinera, is now 13 years old. My 2nd child, Glen Sophia Pinera, is only 8 months old. Since I'm a great believer of racial and gender equality and I subscribe to the idea that all human rights and civil liberties should be respected and secured, I want my daughters to grow up in a world that would not limit their opportunities just because of the fact that they're girls. I don't want them to face discrimination based on gender nor be affected by any form of domestic violence. I know for a fact that domestic violence against women is somehow perpetuated by 'male chauvinism'.

In this age when most countries are democracies and the United Nations Organization upholds gender equality and women's rights, many females around the world still become victims of, gender discrimination, sex trafficking and domestic and sexual violence. I read lots of reports from newspapers about how women become easy prey of violent male chauvinists. TV news, both local and foreign, did feature reports about women either being sold for marriage or becoming victims of abuses by criminals. Feminists and human rights' advocates around the world should continue fighting for gender equality and women's rights because many females are still being sold to slavery, forced to marry men that they don't love, harassed by male chauvinists, limited by certain cultural traditions, and discriminated because of their gender. We have to build a world where both men and women will be equal in opportunities and privileges. Since I'm a male feminist myself, I want to see my 2 daughters grow up in a world where they can show their talents and use their skills without being hindered by gender discrimination. I want to see my daughters enjoy to the fullest their human rights and civil liberties without being affected by male chauvinism.

I believe that respect for human rights and civil liberties should be taught in schools all over the world. Schools should teach students about the values of respecting gender and racial equality, upholding human rights and promoting social justice. Schools all over the world can really help in securing gender equality and curtailing violence against women by properly educating students about human rights, civil liberties and social justice. Building a world where there's no discrimination against women should begin in schools.

(Note: I stood up in front of the Holiday Homes' Daycare Center and held the sign which has a message about building a world without gender discrimination and male chauvinism because I believe that building such kind of a world should begin in schools. The said daycare center somehow symbolizes the transition of San Pedro in Laguna Province, Philippines from town to becoming a city. The said daycare center was built around year 2000. It was during the same year that the 'city-hood campaign' for San Pedro Town in Laguna, Philippines begun. The civic and political leaders who helped in building the said daycare center were also the same ones who started the city-hood campaign for San Pedro. San Pedro officially became a city last January of this year 2014. Hence, the said daycare center somehow symbolizes the transition and progress of San Pedro from a town to becoming a city. My older daughter Beatrice actually started her schooling in the said daycare center. The daycare center is a public school in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines.)
