Build a world where my daughter will always raise her hand when she knows the answer.

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 08:14 AM PST

We still live in a world where boys are encouraged to be more assertive than girls in school. Studies have shown that while boys and girls in early grades raise hands at equal frequency, boys tend to dominate over time by raising their hands more frequently or shouting as they raise their hands. It has been documented that boys call out answers rather than raising their hands up to eight times more than girls, and that girls who call out answers are more likely to be chastised by their teachers. By college, men tend to raise their hands and lead discussions at a higher rate than women, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields.

International Women's day

Posted: 24 Feb 2014 07:00 AM PST

Honey is a student I met while walking my dog in Vauxhall, near the local farm. We started chatting and she decided to make that statement as she thinks women are often portrayed as housewives or sex objects in advertisements.
The building in the background is the MI6 building in London. I used a Nikon Coolpix camera.

Midwest Deep Freeze Creates Frozen Sculptures

Posted: 23 Feb 2014 10:42 PM PST

As the Midwest continues in a deep freeze, dramatic frozen waterfalls dot the landscape. If you are willing to brave the freezing temperatures, and can trudge through the snow and ice, you may find impressive frozen sculptures in many rural areas. This sequence of images were shot near Chaseburg, Wisconsin in the late morning under a deep blue cloudless sky. The exposures were underexposed slightly to retain the delicate textures of the ice and snow. Some of the ice formations have a lingering blue cast at their core, creating a fantasy-like realism. The images, both in color and black and white illustrate the subtle differences in color graduation, tone, and texture.

The temperatures during the shoot were in the low 20's. In Wisconsin, many of the ice formations this year are larger in volume due to the lengthy deep-freeze. More low temperatures are forecasted to be below zero once again this week. Winter seems particularly long and bitterly cold this year. Discovering and photographing these works of nature, make the frigid temperatures at least a little more tolerable.

Build a World where I am seen as the next big tech idea when I walk in the room.

Posted: 23 Feb 2014 08:51 PM PST

I've been programming since I was ten. Most people won't believe that in today's time. That means I've been programming for 30 years and I grew up in the projects of NYC. My appearance makes most people pause and question it. I want the world to be different for my daughters. They should be able to walk in a room full of tech professionals and NOT be asked if she knows if she is in the "RIGHT" room. SHE should be ushered in!!

Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery

Posted: 23 Feb 2014 12:29 PM PST

Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia. There are some 37 islands scattered about and some twenty of these shelter churches and monasteries. On a recent trip to Ethiopia, my travel partners and I set out to explore a few of the churches and monasteries located on Lake Tana. But as it would turn out, the first one we visited and ultimately, in our opinion, the most beautiful monastery was not situated on an island but rather on the Zege Peninsula, a small finger of land located near the southern shore of the lake.

We arrived to Zege Peninsula via boat from the nearby town of Bahir Dar. It took us about an hour and it was an enjoyable ride across the lake. We docked on the Peninsula and from there walked through a forest dotted with coffee plants. It was near harvest time and the plants were laden with bright red fruit. The occasional monkey could be spotted jumping from branch to branch.

Our path ended at a freestanding, double arched entryway. On the other side was the complex of Convent of Mary, founded in the 14th century. Ura Kidane Mihret is a monastery that is part of this complex; the monastery dates from the 16th century. With its adobe buildings topped with thatched roofs and paths winding through native flora, the convent complex feels more like a small African village than the complexes that I'm more accustomed to seeing in other parts of the world. The elements of Christian architecture can be seen including a bell, albeit it one hewn from rock, and a cross atop the roof.

Like most of the Ethiopian churches that I had visited, Ura Kidane Mihret is circular in shape. The interior is divided into three sections – the number representing among other things, the Holy Trinity. The outermost section takes you full circle around the church and is the only area where the public is allowed; this is where parishioners come to pray. The next section in is reserved for clergy and the very inner sanctum is where the church's copy of the Ark of the Covenant is housed; every church in Ethiopia has its own copy.

Without a doubt, Ura Kidane Mihret was one of the most beautiful churches I had visited in Ethiopia. Every inch of wall is painted and the murals date back to about 100 to 250 years ago. The colors ars still so vibrant and that style of the paintings is typical Ethiopian Christian. Most are of scenes from the Bible though Mary figures strongly in many of the paintings, as does St. George, the patron saint of Ethiopia.

Ura Kidane Mihret is a very small monastery – we were there for barely a half hour, which far surpassed the time that it took us to get here and return to Bahir Dar but, it was worth every minute of that effort to see this little gem of a church!

Kyiv - a sea of flowers and candles

Posted: 23 Feb 2014 10:08 AM PST

Today the streets of Kyiv were more crowded than ever as it seemed the whole city came to mourn the heroes, to commit to memory their heroic sacrifice and to make a promise to build Ukraine free of corruption.

People brought flowers to every place where lives had been lost. Streets washed by blood earlier this week are now covered with flowers. The whole downtown became a big memorial in honor of the heroes of Maidan.

Build a World Where

Build a world where more girls crowdfund

Crowdfunding has become a wonderful new financial resource for people all over the world. One website funded over $460 million dollars to different project in 2013. This year over 9 Billion dollars will be crowdfunded for different projects and new inventions. Women are a very small part of that. I speak all over the country and typically only 20% of my classes have women in them. There are a few big wins like Goldie Blox and Black Girls Code however; most women are not seeing success in this area.

Crowdfunding not only raises money, it also builds community and customers (if you have a business). I want to see more women and girls involved in the process and using it to move their ideas forward into manifestation. Crowdfunding is a not trend. It's a real thing. It's here. Women need to look at the opportunity that Crowdfunding provides and take part in it. Too many good ideas, invention and social businesses created by women are dying on the vine because of lack of financing. They have solutions that could change the world. This is a way to fund them.
