Seattle welcomes in a Foggy New Year!

Posted: 01 Jan 2014 03:55 AM PST

It is an honored tradition that our beloved Space Needle rings in the New Year with a spectacular fireworks show to be watched by the whole city. Mother Nature, though, has a funny way of reminding us Seattleites that you'd best not take her for granted. From its perch above the central downtown core, Capitol Hill is a neighborhood famous for its festive gatherings and raucous night-life. Excited crowds numbering in the tens of thousands gathered to watch what had been billed as the "biggest show ever" by it's organizers.

It wasn't meant to be, though, as a heavy fog completely obscured the iconic structure just minutes before the show. Only the lucky ones who had placed themselves directly under the Needle were able to catch a modest glimpse of the usually spellbinding pyrotechnics.

In a city famous for football, coffee and gray skies that are predominant half the year – Seattlites still rallied around the celebratory spirit that had been growing all afternoon and welcomed in the new with style and energy. Spontaneous and slightly intoxicated renditions of Auld Lang Syne filled the air along with a sense of love, togetherness and positive energy.

Fog might have ruled the skies over Seattle tonight but fireworks seemed only a state of mind as we raised our glasses high to the world – Happy New Years everyone. Peace/Love in 2014!

Obamacares

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 09:35 PM PST

My husband and I feel like we won the lottery. After almost a year without health insurance, we will be covered by Kaiser Permanente starting January 1st. Talk about a way to ring in the New Year!

It would not have been possible without the Affordable Care Act.

It's an incredible feeling after the years of debate right here on CNN iReport to have the right to affordable health insurance.

We could no longer afford our individual family health care through Kaiser. The premium literally broke us. Our sons were a few months without insurance, but got them covered on a program called Healthy Families that ironically didn't cover my husband and I.

It has been stressful not to have insurance, after having it for over 16 years.  I missed my doctors and really didn't know where to go for care. I was lucky to find a local medical center that helped me refill my prescriptions this past year and I had to plea for one more refill to get me through the holidays.

Thank you to everyone who called, wrote, and protested Congress to get ACA passed. I can now rest a little easier. Nothing is ever perfect the first time around and there is lots that will have to be amended or tweaked to work for everyone.

My biggest thanks goes to President Obama who proudly cares and knows that affordable health care is a right for everyone.

Happy New Year!

Just want to say how proud we are of our son-in-law USAF SSGT. Jamie Shotkoski. He is based in Colorado Springs, Co. Our youngest daughter Stacy met and married Jamie and now are the parents of two beautiful little princesses named Gracyn 4+ ,and Kaisley 3+Jamie is home now ,but is preparing for deployment on Jan.19th to the Middle East. I believe this is his 5th deployment. He is a fun loving guy who is an awesome dad, and devotes quality time to family. We couldn't be prouder, and pray for his safety on his next deployment.

Sydney's Spectacular Fireworks

Posted: 31 Dec 2013 06:53 AM PST

With Sydney being one of the first countries in the world to celebrate the New Year, they have always put great effort into making the fireworks show spectacular.

Using the Harbour Bridge as the centerpiece, fireworks are shot from various other areas. This year, the city even featured jet skis who shot fireworks into the sky above the harbor while moving about.

The beauty of Sydney's fireworks show is that it can be watched from all over the city. Many vantage points are available, and finding one that suits you is part of the allure and adventure that comes with celebrating the New Year in Sydney.
