10-mile walk home

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 11:43 AM PST

CNN's Nathan Abbott spent nine hours on the interstate yesterday before leaving his car and seeking shelter for the night in a nearby church. Today, he's walking 10 miles to get home and documenting what he finds along the way.

Stranded at Milton High School in Atlanta

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:59 AM PST

From @marcyheinz on Instagram.

Photo 1: I sat in this spot in Alpharetta, GA for over an hour. This was thee hours into a 15-mile commute. People were not kind in the #gridlock

Photo 2: With the sun setting the road conditions rapidly deteriorated. Hopeful people remained on the #gridlocked roads. My new friend and I made the choice to turn around and seek shelter at #MiltonHighSchool. My SUV began sliding backwards down a hill. An unnamed #Fulton county bus driver literally came to my rescue. He forces tree branches under my suv's wheels for traction and two other men pushed and talked me through moments of #panic.

Photo 3: I slept here last night. Parents walked from nearby neighborhoods to provide sleeping bags for the children, school staff and my motley crew of stranded motorists. It wasn't too bad. I had a bag of assorted phone & device chargers which everyone was thrilled to use in order to keep in contact with loved ones.

Photo 4: First light. We are all anxious to get home. I don't know when I will be able to leave and with a weather forecast in the 20's I'm not too hopeful. Myself and the woman I helped plus another woman from my area are considering the most traveled, least hilly routes #home. The way is rural and includes state roads that local news isn't covering. It is scary. Most aren't dressed to be stranded in snow and we are talking about prudent driving/travel survival plans. If we stay put, we may spend a second night in the school... but it is better than the dire reports of stranded drivers who are hungry, cold and out of gas.

Photo 5: #breakfast is served courtesy #miltonhighschool. #fultoncountyschools needs to give their staff awards for going above and beyond helping their community. #godblessthem

Storm of Storms

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:48 AM PST

The Atlanta area was simply NOT prepared for this for a number of reasons. 1) We simply DO NOT have the infrastructure anywhere in the area to deal with ice of this magnitude. 2) We didn't have accurate weather models until the storm was pretty much on top of us. 3) Everyone, I mean EVERYONE left work at the same time. The interstates themselves can't handle this crush of cars on a good day, now put snow and ice inside 4 hours in the mix and you have a recipe for disaster. Bottom line we weren't ready for this. People compare this to 2011. But we knew that storm was a monster, we knew it days in advance. This we couldn't have predicted and didn't have a plan to deal with it.
I spent 10 hours one the roads of Fulton and Cobb County. 27 miles exactly from work (CNN) to home (Cobb County). It wasn't rocket science for me. I have a lightweight car (2009). I shifted into 1st gear and left it there. No skidding, no near misses, no sliding, no problems outside of 10 missing hours of my life.
When I came in it was clear and not so cold as it was when I left.
I saw cars, trucks, and semis abandoned by the wide of the road, I saw people walking down the interstate.
This area clearly needs a better plan. All of it, no just Atlanta.

There is plenty good left in this World

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:16 AM PST

On my way home from worked and stopped to help others get unstuck. Consequently, I got stuck and had to abandon my car. Thankfully a resident of the neighborhood asked if I needed help and attempted to get another motorist and I home. The roads were so bad that we couldn't get close to our homes. He and his wife invited us in, fed us dinner and allowed us to spend the night. We just finished breakfast now I'm watching their son play video games. I can not tell you how grateful I am! Thanks so much Rob!!!

Please, please send National Guard to rescue stranded motorists.  My daughter-in-law has been trying to get home since 1:00 pm when she left her school job in the Atlanta Buckhead area headed south to Douglasville.  My son is stuck on the same highway an hour behind her. They need to be rescued by the state and national government.  They are tired,  cold, and stranded.  Please use your influence to help them.

MORE SNOW FOOTAGE

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 07:21 PM PST

It is after 10pm EST, here in Portsmouth, VIrginia, and the snow has picked up in intensity since our last report. I think it is very easy to see how we could get a foot of snow here in Tidewater. The state of local emergency continues and we heard of 5 accidents on one bridge alone here in the Portsmouth area from the bad weather.

Santa Fe Snowflakes

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:12 PM PST

I'm 14 years old and have been interested in photography for the past year or so. When Christmas came around, my family went to Santa Fe, New Mexico. I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some pictures of snowflakes and to get more experience with a camera I had recently purchased as well as some new lenses. I went outside, set my Washington Nationals hat on the edge of the porch and let the snowflakes fall onto it. After about 45 minutes of trying to get the perfect snowflake, I went over my pictures. Every so often I captured a great picture of a snowflake in perfect or almost perfect focus. The pictures attached are some of the best pictures I captured from that day.

Snow Man in the Gulf Coast

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:46 PM PST

Known for its sandy beaches and balmy breezes, the Gulf Coast is feeling the effects of the Winter Storm Leon. That hasn't stopped some fun seekers from getting out of the warm house and into the freezing temperatures to enjoy the rare icy conditions. Here in Ocean Springs, Mississippi mom and daughter scrape up enough sleet off the car to make a small snow man. Snowfall is expected into the night as the storm presses eastward.

Perfect

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:27 PM PST

Living in Norfolk my entire life, next to a warm freshwater body, we rarely get snow; and when we do, it is usually a slushy mess.

I have never seen a perfect snowflake until now. Such a perfect start to what is going to be a difficult time for this area.

Snowed in at Hoover

Posted: 28 Jan 2014 02:04 PM PST

HOOVER, AL

With 2-4 inches of snow covering Hoover High School 's campus, over 1000 of the school's 3000 students and staff are still trapped inside the massive building. My friends and I have kept ourselves entertained by doing homework, playing hangman, and entertaining ourselves on our school issued iPads. With lots of the roads closed, the school is prepared to house students overnight.
