Home for the holidays

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 11:24 AM PST

This photo was taken with my grandfather one Christmas when I was five. He was like Santa Clause swooping in with presents. We were living at Canon AFB, New Mexico at the time and were soon leaving for Lakenheath AFB , England. I would not see my grandfather again for six years until the year my father left for Vietnam. Such is the life of a military brat.

I also attached a more recent Christmas photo which has students who came to America on the Fulbright Fellowship program. They are from Pakistan and Egypt and I became their American mom while they were here in the US. Since then I have traveled to Pakistan and Egypt both to meet their families.

Not Happy, Happy, Happy !

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 02:35 PM PST

I am NOT Happy, Happy, Happy... I have said this plenty of times. We need more people like Phil in the world. This morning I am still shocked and angry at A&E... Duck Dynasty on A&E, A show based on Christian beliefs and love of hunting of Phil Robertson "The Duck Commander" and the whole Robertson family is trying to be silenced once again... A&E tried to silence prayer on Duck Dynasty already... The devil comes in many forms. And this time, in the form of censorship. A&E is trying to silence Phil for his beliefs and his rights of free speech. I for one will not support A&E in this decision. The Robertson Family should and will stand together. That's what they do... They are a family. I say leave A&E and there are plenty of networks that would love to work with the Robertson Family. The Robertson family does not need A&E, A&E needs the Robertson Family! The truth of the matter is this nation was created for the people, by the people and we were given rights. And as one of our rights, Phil has the right to say what and how he feels... Is there ever any uproar of gays marching the streets, making a spectacle in every major city across America, yearly? No... And they display this as a form of free speech. I say thank you Phil... and look up to you as a powerful voice of reason and are a great Christian man! We need more people like you in the world and in politics. We would be better off for it! Robertson Family, Stand strong and proud... I stand behind y'all and support y'all. This is just an example of the battle of Satan against Christianity... And I have news for you... God reigns as champion! America, We need to stand behind Phil... Use your rights of free speech. Reach out to A&E and tell them how you feel... Please share!

Rare fog in the Grand Canyon

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 04:15 AM PST

I went to see Grand Canyon during the thanksgiving weekend, and when I saw it full of fog in the canyon I thought my vacation was just about ruined. Later, when I get home I read that this temperature inversion is a rare weather event that happens roughly once in 10 years. It was a worthwhile trip after all!

Stunned by natures painting

Posted: 19 Dec 2013 12:02 AM PST

Stunned by natures painting - a fiery red sunset at Huntington beach. I have never seen such a stunning crimson red and fiery sunset in my life till now - thanks to my friends who were all inspired to hit the beach that evening. Perhaps - we were at the right place at the right time . I decided to compose the photograph with myself in the frame and set my camera on a tripod. Everyone stopped in their tracks to savor the moment - the flaming sky.

Typhoon Haiyan: Christmas amidst the rubble

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 11:09 AM PST

The Philippines arguably has the longest Christmas celebration in the world. As early as September 1, you can hear Christmas songs over the radio. People start to put decorations in their houses, commercial and business establishments. Everyone looks forward to the holiday, but children are the most excited. In the communities where Typhoon Haiyan caused death, destruction and despair when it made landfall November 8, it's almost impossible to see and feel the significance of the season. Yet these people remained resolute that amidst the rubble; Christmas hasn't lost its real essence. On the contrary, it becomes more meaningful. World Vision staff saw families putting up what little ornaments they have left, or even using items like old CDs to write messages of hope for those struggling to recover from the massive storm.

Gurbaksh Khalsa: Hunger Strike to Free Prisoners

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 08:26 AM PST

Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa has been on a hunger strike since November 14th, 2013, in Mohali, India. The purpose of this strike is to raise awareness about Sikh political prisoners languishing in Indian prisons years after serving their given sentence. His health has deteriorated considerably; his body is shutting down and he could die within days. His cause has received no media coverage in Punjab, India or elsewhere due to the Indian Government's lack of interest in its minority populations. Prominent newspapers in Punjab, and nationally in India, even when given outside funding, have refused to publish any stories about Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa and his hunger strike. His cause and message is simple, peaceful, and straightforward: free those political prisoners that should be legally free.

From A Q an A with Tom Hanks on Captain Phillips

Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:33 AM PST

The film has been out long enough for many to have already seen it but there might be a few things about the film that you don't know that we were told during the Q&A with Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi

As most know is the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.. It has been nominated for four Golden Globes and 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

One thing we found out from Barkhad Abdi was that he answered and ad in Minnesota that got him his Golden Globe and Screen Actors guild nominated role.

Also Tom hanks told us that the crew on the ship was kept away from Barkhad Abdi and the other pirates till the moment they came on board the ship and it scared the hell out of Hanks and he other actors on the ship.
Here is the big piece of info that you might have not heard before.

The film was wrapping and the ending was shot when it was mentioned to the director and Hanks that Captain Phillips had been met by his navy savior at the navy ships infirmary .

The instant the word infirmary was said Hanks and the director made a bee line for it. From this point on in the film this was the new ending and on the screen you saw why Tom Hanks has two Oscars.

None of what was seen was scripted in this new end to the film.

The film is a very good action flick and Hanks said if that was all it had been he jested that Matt Damon would have been a better choice for the lead. The ending is a text book example of what great acting is and we think that you will enjoy not only the action but this great piece of unscripted acting at end of the film.
