Found Alive, But Not Sure How Long (Update: Currently On HIs Way To Safety)

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 01:42 PM PST

Update: 11/13/13 7:58AM - He's on his way to Cebu to safety. Details Below.

I've received a call this morning from my dad, Josef Ribo, this morning with my mom. It's midnight there when we all talked. He said that the house was damaged, had to leave for Jaro at midnight. He was calling from an unknown number in Tacloban. He's a US citizen. There's a couple others in Jaro that are also US citizens. They were there on vacation. My Dad had a personal project there to help rebuild his roots and was back working on rebuilding a heritage home.

My father has gone missing since the typhoon and last known to be in Jaro. It was great to hear his voice, but his voice sounded a little desperate. Not normal. I wouldn't even begin to imagine being immersed in this chaos. Dead bodies all over, gaunt people searching for food. A home he once knew is now a place of devastation.

I've called the Consulate of Affairs asking for help knowing the military is there. I know where my Dad is. I know where my family is. The military won't go out there. They need to head to Tacloban Airport. They reported to me they have over 600 US citizens registered there. I wish I told him. I have cousins getting food together and driving over. Ferry is being utilized to get to Cebu and deliver food back to their loved ones. My family and the family overseas are doing what they can.

I want to know what the governments are doing in spreading the word of where to get help... Where to go for help... When will help come... I want my Dad and the rest of my family to get moving. I want them home alive. Jaro is a super small town. I travelled there. Simple place hit by an extraordinary disaster. News wouldn't travel there like things would here.

I wish I could do more to help. I wish I could communicate with him directly. Such a challenge in logistics. We're determined to get our family home.

This is my family's story.

Update: 11/13/13 7:58AM

Our family in the Philippines was getting ready to move from different points in Manila and Cebu to provide relief to our family in Jaro, when we got a text that they're on their way out to Cebu via Ormoc. My Dad's vehicle still worked and it's great they used it to get out.

Our immediate family was very fortunate in this situation. Many others weren't. It will be a long time to rebuild this island, though I'm not sure what the government will do in regards to its rebuilding. My Dad's hometowns are essentially gone.

Please help out the island of Leyte and the Philippines. Help them to become independent again.

A "Fantastic" Fandom and Friends

Posted: 11 Nov 2013 06:50 PM PST

I started watching the show thanks to the British Media Track at Dragon*Con and its telly night in 2006. The first episode I saw was "School Reunion" with David Tennant and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, the Third/Fourth Doctor's companion. Well, I was hooked immediately and when I got home I bought Series One with Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor.

How I got to do the Ninth Doctor was that I remembered seeing a lot of Tenth Doctor cosplayers at Dragon*Con, but no Nines. Coming off watching Eccleston's season, I felt like his Doctor needed some love and so I put together the costume for Halloween. Over the years I've changed the jacket a couple times, then added a fake Roman nose and a wart.

I've done the character every year of Dragon*Con since for a total of seven years. I've made a lot of great friends in the cosplay group Prydon Academy and beyond. Being a part of a group like that is really like having this great extended family. That's something the show has given me that is unlike anything I get from other shows.

Now I'm a well-recognized Ninth Doctor cosplayer across the southeast and at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles, but the friends I've made are the most worthwhile part of fandom for me. For anyone who wants to see what "fantastic" antics I get into next or follow my creative projects, check out my cosplay page on Facebook--Agent Doctor (
