Endless Nights at NYCC

Endless Nights at NYCC

Endless Nights at NYCC

Of the many original character creations at New York Comic Con, the family group from Neil Gaiman's Endless Nights was an exceptional feat. In Gaiman's Sandman series, these brothers and sisters of Endless Nights represent Destiny, Delirium, Dream and Death. This was the first comic book to ever be on the New York Times Bestseller List. Kati Bug and friends were fortunate enough to meet Danny Vozzo, a Colorist of Sandman from DC Comics. He was also quite excited to see the troupe.

Other great creations were the latex-driven costumes from Vengeance Designs with characters from Asgard. Tori McKenna, dressed as Atomic Wonder Woman, was photobombed by Deadpool.

Barf from Spaceballs brought his supply of Milkbone, while Storm worked her environment to part the crowds. Doctor Octopus fought Kratos and an assemblage from Westeros took center hall.

A fem fatale Loki waited for coffee with a helmet-free Green Power Ranger. Further down the convention floor, Dr. Girlfriend, Moxxi and Poison Ivy joined forces. Of course, Wolverine clashed claws with X-23. These comiccon moments are endless treasures.

Old School Halloween on Andrew's AFB 1993 1995

Posted: 12 Oct 2013 12:14 AM PDT

Before Halloween stores popped up every year, full of ready to go Zombie kits, blood, gore and body parts, we had to be as creative as possible.. In 1995 we lived on Andrew's Air Force Base. Our yard was always one of the most traveled on Halloween night. Nothing compared to what is available today but lot's of hard work for some of the base kids putting it all together. We stuffed bodies with newspapers for a week, created home made grave stones and all manner of creepy vignettes. Eerie sound effects and scary music set the tone. For the younger ghouls we always had someone stand at the driveway with a kinder, gentler costume to pass out treats to the not so brave.
Kids were only allowed to trick or treat for two hours and the yard had to be cleared by morning. Afterwards we invited all of our characters inside for home made chili, hot chocolate or cider and dessert . We are still in touch with many of those kids today. They have little monster's of their own that look forward to All Hallow's Eve.

Hoosiers Not Eligible for Tax Credit Subsidy?

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 04:10 PM PDT

Can you believe it?

After  taking over a week to finally navigate the Marketplace Exchange to see  what health insurance plans my life partner Iohn may be eligible to  enroll in, it may turn out the most affordable, with the best benefits  to meet Iohn's health insurance needs, may cost $293 per month instead  of $51 per month.  That premium cost would be more than one week's pay!

Indiana  Attorney General Greg Zoeller has filed a lawsuit claiming that  Hoosiers are ineligible to benefit from the tax credit subsidy offered  through the Affordable Care Act to purchase health insurance through the  federally operated Marketplace Exchange.

Zoeller's  contention, according to published news reports, is since Indiana chose  not to expand Medicaid nor to set up its own exchange, opting for  Health and Human Services to maintain the exchange, the ACA bars the  state's citizens from the tax credit subsidy.

Supposedly  the decision of the state not to participate in implementing the ACA  exchange was done to protect employers in the state from being bound by  the requirement that businesses with 50 or more employees working at  least 30 hours per week offer health insurance or be subject to a fine.

Zoeller  along with 15 school corporations across the Cornfield are arguing that  the wording of one section of the ACA implies that that the tax credit  subsidy applies only to state-run exchanges and not the federal  exchange. Thus Hoosier business owners cannot be subject to the fine for  not offering health insurance since there is no state exchange.

Along with Indiana, Oklahoma and six other states have filed similar lawsuits.

Zoeller  noted that schools and colleges in the state have had to cut back hours  of employees to keep from being threatened with the hefty fine in the  ACA on employers of 50 or more employees working 30 hours or more per  week.

My  partner Iohn's company, which operates over 200 restaurants nationwide,  has already cut its employees' hours to 29 maximum per week. The  company via letter last week notified employees it would not offer  health benefits as of January 1, 2014.

While  it does seem the AG may have a case, it also appears that the State is  more interested in protecting employers than workers in this lawsuit.

While  Iohn and I disagree with the ACA as written, as our liberal and  Democratic friends keep stressing, "it's the law of the land". We are  following the law and Iohn is shopping and will likely sign up for  coverage effective January 1. That doesn't mean we agree with the law as  written, but we also do not believe in being scofflaws.

Businesses  were granted a one-year delay by President Barack Obama in implementing  its part of the ACA. The individual mandate requiring all Americans  purchase insurance is still on schedule for an effective date of January  1.

This  is one cog that is clogging up the works currently in Congress which  has led to the partial shutdown of government and difficulty in agreeing  on raising the nation's debt ceiling.

Sadly  for Hoosiers, if the lawsuit is successful, the cost of premiums will  keep health insurance out of reach of low-income workers. At Iohn's  current number of hours and rate of pay, the unsubsidized premium will  equate to about 1 1/2 weeks of work to pay the premium.

From  the Cornfield, this appears to be yet another unforseen consequence of  voting for a bill and signing it into law before anyone read it.

Fustercluck

October 5th 2013, I experienced the most disturbing 5k in history. Around Vail Lake outside San Diego in Temecula, this Hillbilly 5k was unusual. I'd say more of a 5k hike than a run and through a muddy swamp and chased by Hillbilly Hunters! "WHERE THE CLUCK AM I ?!" Check out my photos of the event. The last photo is the 5k medal - can of Budweiser.

Stardate 2013: NYCC Has Arrived

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 11:16 AM PDT

In a world where costuming knows no bounds, a small group of several tens of thousands gather. Drivers along the West Side Highway become passerby witness to this display of fandom and imagination. Within this labyrinth convention, heroes and villains find common ground. New York Comic Con has become a sold-out haven for various exhibitors, guests, artists and attendees.

Roaming the halls, Xena and Poison Ivy keep good company while a Ghostbuster eyes an Ecto Blaster. Bane is quite a mask challenge but dedication is part of the character. Steampunk cosplayers have also landed their invasion and their vendors are abound. An Inspector Gadget caught most by surprise, yet his helicopter hat was not a fully functional one. With the high level of authenticity at these conventions, you never know what will end up flying through the halls.

Starfleet are usually in hand especially when Black Cat is nearby. Also touring the convention floor was Kristen Bloschak in Celes' opera gown, from Final Fantasy VI, partnered with Emma Frost. Rogue protects the press room while a dark angel takes on the minion crowds. In flowing garb and ominous stance, Snape endows us with his presence.

Some of the spotlight entertainment guests are Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, Sigourney Weaver, David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson. John Barrowman has a panel which is timely for the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, where at this convention Colin Baker is the resident Doctor.

NYCC is beyond packed and brimming with their 2013 program, a separate dimension must lurk within the grounds.
