Packing Heat for our Troops

Packing Heat for our Troops

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 02:34 AM PST

During a Christmas Party for the families of a local Michigan National Guard Unit in Afghanistan, they had a chance to pack care packages that included FREE shipping to their loved ones. Included in these care packages were hand warmers that people have been donating from all over the USA.

People often asked about WHY Hand Warmers in Afghanistan? Many don't realize that they do get snow in the mountains and it actually does get cold.

Rock n Roll Marathon Vegas: PHOTOS

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 08:18 PM PST

The Zappos Rock n Roll Marathon took place on Sunday December 2, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV. Over 30,000 runners from every state and several countries came to Sin City to compete and raise money for a good cause. The Rock n Roll Marathon series is a world class marathon organization that embeds charity into its races. This marathon was a benefit for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.

America's newest bachelor Sean Lowe participated in the race as a part of Crohn's & Colitis Team Challenge.

Other celebrities on hand included Kate Gosselin, Nikki Reed (Twilight) and Paul McDonald (American Idol).

Kate Gosselin was very excited to take part in the marathon. "I try to run as often as I can. Running about 10 miles each time I get out," Gosselin stated.

Nikki Reed and husband Paul McDonald ran the race together. When asked what they would do if one got tired, McDonald said "We are in this together, its a big accomplishment for both of us. We will stick together and finish together." The Twilight series has just come to an end and many fans are left wondering what's next for Reed and her cast mates. "It's so freshly over I can't see it as being over. I dont think I will do another vampire series, but if they called and said another Twilight was being made I'd be the first to sign up."

The runners were very excited about the race, the energy was overflowing the streets. Many of the participants dressed up in fun coustumes from Elvis to a penguin to a Viking and everything in between. The wind was very strong but that didn't seem to deter runners from competing and completing the marathon. For more information on the Rock n Roll marathon series you can visit their website: http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/

Can Rock Jetties Protect the Rockaways?

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 06:12 PM PST

Following Hurricane Sandy, the beach, boardwalk and playgrounds east of Beach 86th Street in the Rockaway section of New York City were still in place—destroyed, but still in place. West of Beach 86th Street the beach and boardwalk caused tremendous damage to homes in Belle Harbor and Neponsit, with some pieces of boardwalk actually turning up in basements flooded with five feet of water.

According to Friends of Rockaway Beach, an advocacy group composed of lifelong residents, at the root of this tale of two Rockaways are the rock jetties that acted to slow the surge of ocean water between Beach 17th Street and Beach 86th Street. Today a few hundred people met at this point of demarcation to demand the immediate construction of rock jetties at strategic points along the entire length of the peninsula.

In addition to the hundreds that attended, numerous speakers, including former City Councilman and State Senate candidate Eric Ulrich, offered vocal support for the plan, which is also recognized by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as the best solution for stemming beach erosion. Along with rock jetties, residents also called for the prompt placement of three million cubic tons of sand.

Besides stirring up the ocean, Hurricane Sandy has stirred up a lively and sometimes heated debate about the wisdom of dedicating precious resources to the reconstruction of beaches and beachfront property, given the likelihood of major coastal storms in the future. Those present at this gathering today, however, are passionate about rebuilding their beloved beach community and anyone of the opinion that this would be a waste of money voiced it at their own peril.

A month after Sandy

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 05:56 PM PST

Yesterday I went to an area of The Jersey Shore just north of Seaside Heights called Ortley Beach. Hurricane Sandy ravaged this area a month ago, but it appears as if it just happened yesterday. We arrived in Ortley to help some people gut their houses. We encountered serious amounts of mold, and endless piles of peoples belongings. This area will need serious amounts of work to be brought back to life. I wish these people the best of luck in the upcoming months.

Christmas Market, Prague Czech Republic

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 01:00 AM PST

Chistmas season opens in Prague with the huge tree decorated on Old Town Square before the Tyn Church. Every year the Old Square is site of the annual Christmas Market that draws thousands of tourists into the center of Prague after a short lapse of sanity when streets are safe to navigate for the locals.

The Christmas market is a gathering place for outdoor shopping with kiosks that are loaded with traditional Czech wares and gifts from woollen hand knit goods to gaily decorated hand-blown Christmas balls. The air is filled with music coming form the large outdoor stage planted under the towers of the majestic Tyn Church.

The market surrounds the oversized central scuplture on the square of Jan Hus angrily denouncing the corruption of the church in the ring of the Tyn Church, St Nicholas and the Old Town Hall. In the center of the market is a small bridge to nowhere that allows tourists to climb up and take their views of the crowded market below. The light is either too bright or too dark as the square is overshadowed by the soaring towers of neighboring buildings and the crowded roofs of kiosks below.

The warm weather and blue skies brings out hordes of tourist who munch down on the local festival foods offered at gaily decorated kiosks. Street food includes klobas, a large sausage with dark bread, rolled puff pastry and palatschinken, a thin pancake batter similar to a crepe. Roasted pork and chicken scent the air as their spits turn round over open fires. A quick march about the square encounters swarms of tourists; a blacksmithery with bells and armor; food, food, food and more food; beer and coffee flowing like the Vltava and crowded huts filled with local handmade goods.

Overall a festive spirit pervades the square with horses dressed in holiday livery including jingle bells that jingle merrily as the fiakers roll through the dense crowds bearing their occupants away from the turmoil of the noisey crowd.

Around the corner under the Old Town Hall, a limousine is parked for a bridal couple who have nuptials in the Old Town City Hall. The black limousine is decked with white roses as the bride and groom step out to the applauding crowd.

Peaceful Protests in Tahrir Square

Posted: 01 Dec 2012 07:59 PM PST

Tens of thousands of concerned citizens walked to Tahrir from several neighborhoods around Cairo on Tuesday (27 Nov) in a peaceful protest against President Mohamed Morsy's constitutional declaration, issued on Thursday 22 November, that gave his presidential decisions immunity against judicial review, forbid the courts from dissolving either the current Constituent Assembly drafting the constitution or the Shura Council, and appointed a new prosecutor general.

Throughout the day, people arrived from different Cairo neighborhoods in unity and in peace. Muslim, Christian, men, women, young and old came together to demand annulment of president's controversial decree.

The Egyptian flag flew across the square, after different political groups instructed their members not to carry partisan banners or flags.

Representatives from the lawyers syndicate, engineers, journalist syndicates, and students organized groups to march to Tahrir Square, called the road to negotiations.

Besides actors and actresses, many prominent leaders were present in the protest. Nobel laureate and ex-presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei led one group from Shubra. Leftist activist and ex-presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahy headed another group from Mostafa Mahmoud Mosque.

Only a few streets away, in Simon Bolivar square, tear gas remained thick in the air. The street was quiet, except for a few young boys mulling around, after violent clashes between a group of protestors and police escalated after a week of fighting. Young protesters hurled Molotov cocktails at police and security forces, who answered with tear gas canisters.

Filipinos have their own unique taste and style in celebrating the birth of Christ. Some of the decorations like here in Cavite, Philippines are made from recycled materials like plastic, styrofoam and foils.

To most Filipinos, Christmas is the most anticipated fiesta of the year. Warm-hearted people with their true devotion to family and faith all contribute to a holiday celebrated in the true Philippines fiesta tradition.
