Posted: 12 Nov 2012 07:08 AM PST I want to salute my hero, my husband today on Veteran's Day. He is Staff Sergeant James Varnum and he left the day after Election Day to fight for our country. Today on Veteran's Day he is somewhere in Afghanistan making his way to his post and getting ready for nine months of hardship. I pray for his safe return as well as those of his soldiers fighting beside him. He is the love of my life and this is the least I could do for him on this special day. I want the country to hear his name and know how proud we all are of him and thankful to him for his service. He is a wonderful dedicated soldier and together over the past five years we have managed to blend our families and four children; we also added an adorable furry addition….his shorter companion….his dog Lola. We all love you baby! We've got your back here and stay safe!!! Can't wait to see you…. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

First brazilian ham group in Kiribati Posted: 11 Nov 2012 10:20 PM PST Kiribati, whose capital is Tarawa, is recognized internationally for two important facts. The first was the great battle of Tarawa - where thousands of Japanese / American lives were lost in the U.S. containment to the advancement of Japan in the South Pacific. On the other hand, according to surveys, Kiribati is the first country to disappear from the map by the increase of ocean water due to global warming. In this context, a group of Brazilian hams, duly authorized by the Government of Kiribati, had the opportunity to make an expedition to the nation's capital - Tarawa, with the goal of providing radio amateurs around the world the possibility of contact with a place so distant and remote. Loading all equipment and antennas, with encouragement just hams from around the world and some companies linked to the hobby, with no financial goal, the group landed at Tarawa in mid-October and was able to develop an excellent job, totaling more than 40,000 contacts with worldwide. This achievement was recognized by the country's president, Mr. Anote Tong, who received part of the group of hams Brazilians for an interview in his office. When everyone turned their eyes to the growing technology, where the internet is the flavor of the month, this hobby, which is also used in emergency situations, it may be the only form of communication in remote places, as is the case. More information can be obtained on the official website of the expedition - http://www.mdxc.org/t30py This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 07:07 PM PST It has been two weeks since hurricane Sandy hit NYC but there are still a lot of areas who still have no electricity. Brooklyn's Coney Island residents feel that they have been forgotten and that their area is not getting enough media coverage. Nurses and doctors have volunteered their times to help those with medical problems. They are working from a freight container with minimal supplies. All of the supplies are dropped at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly church and from there distributed to the community.
Members and organizers of Occupy Sandy have come out to deliver hot meals, medicine and blankets.
There is still much work to be done but with the help of great volunteers who donate their times and efforts to help the city will recover. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Crosses in Lafayette: A Tribute to the fallen. Posted: 11 Nov 2012 10:45 AM PST On a small hill in Lafayette California over 6,000 crosses have been erected and displayed as an on-going tribute and to memorialize the soldiers who have been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan. This hillside has been marked with controversy, and has sparked anger and even attracted counter protests to it's existence. The hillside is owned by a woman named Louise Clark. He husband was a WWII veteran. However both have passed away, but volunteers tirelessly continue to maintain the site. Jeff Heaton was the man who started the installation and his contact info can be found in one of the pics. The San Jose Mercury news won several awards for their coverage of the installation, but it was citizen journalists who broke the story first. Here is a link toa blog created over the Crosses in Lafayette. I posted pictures on Flickr when it was first started. http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebelgirl/297460898/ This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Cherry @themovies - Legends of the Guardians Posted: 11 Nov 2012 01:10 AM PST I saw Legends of the Guardians and was impressed with this 3D animated film. It didn't have the frantic energy of 80s Disney films but instead was a rich new fairy tale with a great story and beautiful animation. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film it had an emotional core that will appeal to the child in all if us and a plot that is layered enough to entertain adults but still visual wonders for small kids. It's a true modern family friendly animated movie that doesn't rely on crazy hi jinks or songs but instead a plot that ties kids favorite legends and a few they may not yet know. Legends of the Guardians will be out in time for winter holidays so go see the film and create a new holiday tradition.

Boston Helps Bring Relief to PS 43 Posted: 10 Nov 2012 09:50 PM PST Leandra Aguirre is a 6th grade teacher at Far Rockaway PS 43, who has been working non stop with fellow co-workers on bringing relief to their students. Ms. Aguirre had informed me that her mother, Janis Aguirre and best friend Elsa Bourque, a 2nd grade teacher at Thomas J. Kenny Elementary school in Boston; had organized a donation drive and that they would be delivering the donations themselves. Today was the day for Boston to show their love for PS 43. Janis Aguirre, Elsa Bourque, Richard Bourque, Bruce Larson and Mike Do had drove from Boston to Far Rockaway to distribute all the donations that they had collected. The PS 43 students and their families were overwhelmed by Boston's generosity and could not believe that so many cared about their well being. Special Thanks to the organizations that had donated: Boston Fire Department, Battleground Games & Hobbies, members of Harvard Medical School, the Bostion are rape crisis center, graduate students from UMass Boston college of education, Hanover high schools, Ms. Bourque's students, family and friends. 4,000 marched in the annual Pride Parade in Hong Kong, led by legislative councilors Cyd Ho, Gary Fan and openly-gay Raymond Chan, up from 2,500 last year, according to Connie Chan, chief director and spokesperson of the organizing committee.
The parade was led by Legislative Councilors Gary Fan, Cyd Ho and openly-gay Raymond Chan plus ex-legislator Tanya Chan with artist/entertainer celebrities Wyman Wong, Hilary Tsui, Anthony Wong, Denise Ho and Alton Yu.
The theme was "Dare to Love", and the parade held up and waving banners and rainbow flags marching from Victoria Park to Chater Garden in Central.
More and more Chinese mainlanders joined in the event as Hong Kong is a much more liberal and freer society.
Nong Zhijun, Liu Bangjie and friends from the Guizhou Blue group, of Guizhou province, China, dressed to the traditional costumes of Miao minority, support Hong Kong Pride Parade. Many more were from the neighboring Guangdong province.
The highlight of the event as the surprise coming-out announcement by actress and singer Denise Ho Wan-sze at the Chater Garden stage.
The marchers called for public debate on legislation to ensure equal rights for people of all sexual orientation. A motion put by legislator Cyd Ho last week on this issue was opposed by conservatives. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Iconic Wisconsin mural threatened Posted: 10 Nov 2012 05:33 PM PST Community members are rallying to preserve a vintage hand-painted pop art advertising mural of a Budweiser bottle and two cans painted on grain silos at the end of Washington Street in downtown Manitowoc, WI that have stood as an iconic landmark for 60+ years. In a Fox news report on Thursday, John Salzman, age 68, of Manitowoc was quoted as remarking that when he was in the service, he always knew he was home again when he laid eyes on the Bud bottle and cans. The mural is fast-tracked to be obliviated by sandblasting on Monday. Community members, artists and expats are mourning and protesting this expedited decision which only came to light this week. The compelling reason to destroy this historic landmark? None. The city planner decided to invoke an archaic city ordinance pertaining to 'signs' and pursued enforcement applied to the iconic piece of vintage roadside Americana. Sadly, the current mayor of Manitowoc has no interest in advocating on behalf of the community in such a situation. Community members are planning a vigil to rally support tomorrow night, Sunday, Nov. 11 at 7pm CST to continue raising awareness of this historic landmark in imminent peril. The vigil will have to be candle-lit as for the first time in recent memory the end of Washington Street has gone dark. With the preparations afoot for the sandblasting, the lights, which until have illuminated the landmark, have gone dark. National award-winning artist Jason Prigge spent the day Saturday painting a plein air portrayal of the iconic view to garner additional notice. A groundswell of support for preserving the mural manifested in the folks who stopped to photograph the piece, chat about the landmark and honk with thumbs up while driving past. An online petition is also being circulated. It is critical that this issue receive attention immediately, however, due to the imminent doom. Hopefully government at its worst will not prevail.
