Never give up hope

Posted: 02 Apr 2012 05:12 AM PDT

My son Joey has Autism and Epilepsy. We want the world to know that Autism looks different for every child. Parents can't give up hope; they are the ones that lead the journey their kids are on and it is up to them how successful their kids will be. They must be their child's biggest supporter and advocate.

My Life with Autism

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 11:17 PM PDT

My name is Zachary Nayer. At the age of 3, I was diagnosed with Autism. In elementary school, I had problems paying attention in class, as well as reading and writing. When I found music, it helped me stay focus on my schoolwork. I was raise by two loving parents that never gave up on me. Because of this, I'm currently in grad school. I have accomplished a lot in my life. For instance, I graduated high school in the top 5%, became an Eagle Scout at 17, graduated from SUNY Purchase with a degree in Percussion Performance, and still help out people in the community. Besides grad school, I'm currently in a band called White Noise Radio. As for music, I play drums/percussion, piano, guitar, bass, harmonica, ukulele, and I sing. I hope someday to work full time performing music. As for jobs, I currently work in the summer time as a lifeguard. I always love to help people that are less fortunate than I am. One place I like to volunteer is at Camp Sundown, and XP camp (xeroderma pigmentosum) for kids that can't go out into the sunlight. For me, being a music therapist is a way for me to use music to help people, just like how it helped me in life.

Sounds of Autism

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 11:08 PM PDT

I am in love with language. Not just English, but also German, French, Spanish, Mandarin, and American Sign Language. I love comparing the structure of each one, the way sounds differ from one language to another, and the shades of meaning that words in each language have. Language has talked me into an enjoyable career as a speech therapist.
Oh yes -- I also have Asperger's Syndrome.
I am especially sensitive to sound. I usually go to the grocery store in the evening when it is quieter. When I know there will be lots of noise or many people talking at once, I wear my headphones. But if it weren't for the way my brain plays with sound, would I be able to immerse myself in languages the way I do?
Just like everyone, people on the spectrum have things we're good at and other things that we're... not so good at! It's all about how we think about and use our abilities. Take your special interest and nourish it. Be "aumazing"!

Gannon

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 07:05 PM PDT

Gannon is 4 years old. He has an older brother and sister. They are 5 and 9. They are so understanding that Gannon does not speak the same as they do. BUT Gannon does ride a bike, read a book, and write his name, just as the other two do. He is only 4. He spells anything that my daughter does. If we quiz our 9 year old daughter with her spelling words, he will repeat it, sometimes before she does. He is a very sweet little boy, and has the heart the size of Africa. He gives hugs and kisses just as other little kids his age, maybe even more. Having a child with autism is a journey for sure, and definately made me realize that having children, they are learning from me, as well as I am them. They teach me things every day. Especially Gannon. He teaches me all the time about how to love unconditionally, regardless of what has happned in the past. He is honsetly passtionate caring and non-materialistic. My children have came to understand that he is the same as them, just with different needs, as he is not completely off the chart. He can still read a book, ride a bike, and spell his name, just as they can. He just has some different needs and expectations than they have. I am blessed to have a child on the spectrum. I believe that once everyone is 'aware' of what autism is, it will make a world of difference. When I first found out Gannon might be autistic, I was devastated. I didn't know what to think, thought my life was over. I didn't know one thing about autism, just heard some people talking about autism, and I only knew about the severe ones, and thought to myself, that is not Gannon. Then I came to do some more research and realized that there are so many different areas on the spectrum that he falls under. Every child is different, autistic or not, and I just happened to be blessed with 3 beautiful children, one of which is on the spectrum. If you have been told that your child might have autism, do not be alarmed, for it is a life changing experience, but it is not the end of the world, it is the beginning to a new view on things. Open your arms to a world of difference you never knew existed. If we could only see the world through their eyes, what a difference it would make. My little guy is always happy and always on the go. He makes any room of children just glow with smiles and happiness when he walks in, because he greets everyone with a smile and says 'hi, I'm Gannon' His teachers all say he is a sweet little boy and a very intelligent little one as well. I hope that people understand that autism awareness isn't just so people are aware there is autism around, here is to hoping they understand what this autism means. It doesn't mean they are useless, hopeless, or anything else. They are human too, and just look at things from a different perspective. If we all lived to not judge before knowing, as these young individuals do, it would have an amazing outcome. I am proud and blessed to have been introduced to autism the way I was. I just pray that everyone is aware of what autism is exactly, and do some research. As they say, the more you know.......:) Have a great day, and thank you all for this wonderful thing you are doing!

Geeky Owl Bag - for the hipster nerds out there.

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 06:47 PM PDT

I have a company called Happy Sew Lucky and I design cut 'n sew patterns printed on fabric. This bag is my entry for this week's Spoonflower bag design contest. Bags are a vital fashion accessory. I decided to animate my design with an owl because I love the graphic impact that an owl's eyes make. Most of my designs have a twist to them, and the nerd glasses give this design that raise of the eyebrow or chuckle response that I enjoy. Many of us crafty types out there are a bit geeky, so the glasses seemed like the perfect accessory for the owl, and the bag the perfect accessory for geeky fashionistas.

Owens Story on Autism 2012

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 05:26 PM PDT

Owen was diagnosed with a form of Autism at the age of 3. It's important for him to let others know Autism doesn't change who you are as a person. It only adds to how great a person you are for what you must overcome.

SuperHeros that Share!

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 05:22 PM PDT

I am a young very hip mother of 2 boys. 8 and 4. Our little one, Julian Wise was diagnosed at 2 years old. When you have a child who is text book "normal" and learn to parent an easy child, you'd never think in a million gazillion years your next son would be so different and so challenging. I felt like a failure because I couldn't soothe my child. I couldn't figure out what he needed. Exploring unknown territory. I was more afraid than he was. We were thrown into this very dark scary place, and I needed to learn how to get us out. Isn't that what we do as Mothers? We're supposed to know everything. We are Warriors to these little boys. In fact, we are the first super hero's they ever knew. Our life was kind of like swiss cheese or a puzzle, filling in the missing pieces. Finding the right Doctors, the right therapist, the right schools and the right food to eat. We learned step by step what worked and what didn't. I learned that this child was perfect just the way he was. All of the therapy has helped his language and the social interaction with his peers. I wouldn't change anything about Julian. Not even on his hardest day. He has been the real super hero in our family. He has taught us how to breathe, how to live, how to love. As a result of his diagnosis, I returned to college and am pursuing my ABA. I want to help other young mothers and families who have been affected by Autism. I was asked one time, if there was a pill I could give to Julian to make him "normal" .. I think it would take away who he is. His essence. and I think he is wonderful just the way he is.

Flashmob

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 12:17 PM PDT

Flashmob is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and artistic expression. This time they were just standing for a few minutes, and doing nothing. Those blurred people were promoting Converse shoes (they were colored in cheery colors) and they really added something special to this photo.

Catholics Observe Palm Sunday

Millions of Catholics attended mass today in the Philippines to mark the beginning of the Holy Week - Palm Sunday. This custom commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. This Filipino tradition was introduced by the Spaniards on early 1500's and still being practiced today.
