Trayvon Martin Justice Rally Draws Hundreds in Washington DC

Posted: 24 Mar 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Amid light but steady rainfall, hundreds of people crowded Pennsylvania Avenue and Freedom Plaza on Saturday afternoon to protest the Feb. 26 killing of a 17-year-old black Florida teenager, whose death has sparked outrage across the nation in recent weeks.

Leading the crowd in chants of "enough is enough" and "no justice, no peace," speakers gathered in front of the seat of the District of Columbia government, calling for justice in Trayvon Martin's death, which they said was motivated by racism and discrimination.

Thousands gather in DC for Reason Rally - Largest Secular Gathering in History

Posted: 24 Mar 2012 02:25 PM PDT

Approximately, 30,000 secular activists and supporters from across the United States and around the world, gathered Saturday, March 24, 2012, in the Mall area in Washington DC for what is billed as the largest secular gathering in history.

The all-day event featured speakers such as British comedian Eddie Izzard, Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), the first openly atheist member of Congress, biologist and writer, Richard Dawkins and many others.

Highlights of the Reason Rally include a performance by Tim Minchin and the band "Bad Religion," and a tribute to the late Christopher Hitchens.

Organizers say the purpose of the event is to forge connections among people who embrace a god-free lifestyle and to show the American public that the number of those who don't believe in a god is growing.

The goal is social and legislative equality, as there are many stigmas against atheists.

In a piece for The Washington Post's On Faith blog, Dave Silverman, president ofAmerican Atheists, wrote: "While the Reason Rally is a non-partisan event with attendees from all along the political spectrum, it is a statement to Washington, to our elected leaders, and to the rest of the nation that non-believers are a legitimate political segment of the American population."

According to the American Religious Identification Survey in 2008, the number of people who claim no specific religious affiliation had grown to 34 million, 15 percent of the U.S. adult population. A survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life conducted in 2008 yielded similar findings.

"What is lost, what is flying under the radar is that there is a growing and mushrooming atheist movement in the U.S.," said Rick Wingrove, chief executive of Beltway Atheists.

The rally began at 10 a.m. and will be held until 6 p.m. on that part of the Mall between the National Museum of American History and the Agriculture Department. The event is free and open to the public.

Venice, Italy

Posted: 24 Mar 2012 11:48 AM PDT

My husband and I took a spring break trip to Venice. The city is a miracle of design where three million tourists a year breathe in the beauty. The foundation of Venice started in 421 when a trading post was set up and has transformed into a magical place of history. Two hundred years ago there were 10,000 Gondalas in Venice, now there are 500.. Horses were outlawed in the 14th century so the noble class used Gondalas as a way of transportation. They were flat without a rudder and the captain stood up using one oar to navigate.

From GT Yellow Jacket to USMC 2ndLt David Pham

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 02:09 PM PDT

David Pham graced Atlanta for 4 years as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and ROTC member before graduating with a degree in Management and commissioned as a 2ndLt in the United States Marine Corps. David's 's high energy, love for people, charisma, willingness to always lend a hand and kindhearted spirit was a great light to all of campus and all those he encountered. After graduation, he went on to complete the competitive, rigorous Infantry Officer Course (IOC) in Quantico, VA to become an Infantry Officer. David is now bravely deployed in Afghanistan and occasionally still finds time to display his Georgia Tech spirit with the Yellow Jacket flag. David is an inspiration to us all. He is a great example of hard work, determination and selflessness. David is greatly missed by friends and loved ones here at home in the states. We thank him for his dedicated service and pray for his safe return!
