The Afghani Murders---When "Good" Men Do Bad Things

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 09:14 AM PDT

How can such an apparently good person as the accused American soldier do something as heinous as murdering innocent people? David Brooks writes about the animal essence of people and the capacity to kill. The buddhist model has good and bad residing in all of us--and it is upon us to empower the good and minimize the bad.

SLIDESHOW: Confetti, Islam and Democracy: Tunisians Celebrate Independence Day

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 08:40 AM PDT

Children held up banners atop their parents shoulders, teenagers beat on drums, and Tunisians of all walks of life waved flags and sang the Tunisian national anthem. The atmosphere was carnival-like on this national holiday, but the debate was very serious.

Today, a crowd of a few thousand filled Avenue Habib Bourguiba, the main and picturesque Tunis thoroughfare named for former Tunisian president, Habib Bourguiba. Bourguiba became the first president of Tunisia after the country won independence from France on this day in 1956.

Tunisia's Independence Day—the second since its political revolution—has a new emotional weight after the country ousted the oppressive President Ben Ali on January 14, 2011 in a popular uprising. Tunisia's successful revolution was the first in the Arab Spring and sparked protests in other countries throughout the region.

Today, many liberal Tunisians dominated the crowd with chants, songs and taunts directed largely at the leaders of Ennahda, the Islamist political party now controlling the Tunisian government after the October 2011 election.

Tunisians directed "dégage!," French for "get out"—a popular slogan during Tunisia's revolution—at the new Prime Minister, Hamadi Jebali, and party leader Rached Ghannouchi, both of Ennahda.

The now popular Arab Spring chant used in Tunisia, Egypt and other nations, "ishaab ureed isqat al-nizam", or "the people want to take down the regime", had a different twist today. Tunisians chanted instead, "the people want a civil state".

The anti-Ennahda, pro-democratic tone is largely in response to a protest last Friday outside the Tunisian parliament where a crowd of a few thousand demonstrated in support of sharia (Islamic law) becoming the main source of legislation in Tunisia.

Before the revolution, President Ben Ali and previous President Habib Bourguiba both established strict policies enforcing secularism in the tiny North-African country. The newly elected National Constituent Assembly is in the process of rewriting the Tunisian constitution, and the question of religion in the new government is polarizing the country.

Although the tone today was critical of the new government and Islam's place in the liberal and largely secular country, this serious debate did not stop Tunisians from celebrating their independence and their revolution.

Staff Sgt.Robert Bales Could Have Been My Only Son?

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 12:38 AM PDT

Uploaded on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 07:35:51 +0000

The recent event including the killing of women and children dictates that our Commander in Chief reevaluated and changes his time table for leaving Afghanistan.

I believe that it is time to leave Afghanistan. My belief is based in part on a December 2009 telephone interview with my only son Keith who served as a Military Police Officer in the US Marine Corp from 1991-95. During the interview for a CNN I-Report titled"Thankful That Only Son Isn't Part of AfghanistanWar Nightmare" he stated "Soldiers aren't trained to occupy or to police a country. They are trained to enter an area and kill the enemy and move to the next area and do the same thing." He stated "that the mission in Afghanistan appeared to be police operation as opposed to a military operation."

Sergeant Bale's case is a horrible example of my son's 2009 assessment and the toll that multiply deployments are having on our military. More importantly it is a reason to leave Afghanistan in a responsible manner by the end of President Obama's first term in office.

It Time to Leave Afghanistan Mr. President: The Status Quo in Afghanistan Is Not Sustainable.

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 08:26 PM PDT

Uploaded on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 03:24:11 +0000

In a November12, 2009, I-Report I argued that President Obama should not order additional troops to Afghanistan but withdrawn our troops because of widespread voter fraud that was committed during the October 20, 2009, presidential election of Hamid Karzai.

A December 1, 2009, article on CNN.com titled "Obama Afghanistan strategy: More troops in quickly, draw down in 2011"stated in part: "During a speech on Tuesday Obama said his strategy of sending 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan is part of a strategy to reverse the Taliban's momentum and stabilize the country's government." Three major objectives stated by President Obama: Deny al Qaeda a safe haven • Reverse the Taliban's momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow Afghanistan's government • Strengthen Afghanistan's security forces and government. Other strategies will include holding Afghan government leaders accountable for corruption, focus assistance on areas that could help the lives of Afghans, and securing the country's border with Pakistan.

Although I commend President Obama goals and objectives for Afghanistan they weren't sustainable in 2009/2010 and definitely aren't sustainable now. It is time to bring the troops home in a responsible manner by the end of his first term in 2013.

US out of Afghanistan and cure our troops.

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 05:10 PM PDT

Yes I believe the US should get out of Afghanistan now, and all money used to develop and or make/buy weapons should be used to cure, or heal our troops. And I believe the US Military should now be used to assist countries who have been affected by the disasters, such as Haiti and Japan.

Eyes Wide Open: A visual exhibit of US Military deaths.

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 11:12 AM PDT

On March 19th 2012, which is the 9th Anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, a group called Iraq Veterans Against the War hosted an exhibit called Eyes Wide Open to bring attention to the soldiers or troops who have or will be killed  in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Over 6,000 Americans have been killed, not including the suicides, and at least 481 of them were Californians. The United States Department of Defense does not count suicides as killed in action.
The pictures and videos show boots, but up close they are people.

This exhibit was placed in front of San Francisco's City Hall on the 9th Anniversary of the Iraq War. It was held for the last 9 years and this year will be the last time.

Racism is Killing America

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 11:06 AM PDT

Shooting Trayvon Martin in Florida, just for the color of his skin is an Outrage! When will America wake up and see the inside, not out? When will George Zimmerman be arrested for killing this innocent young man?

After all the news videos and stories showing what really happened, this guard is still walking free? He can NOT claim it was his life that was in danger, most people holding a gun doesn't feel scared. To be honest, if you are armed and scared, YOU are the dangerous one. Police even told him NOT to follow him, but he choose to do it anyway.

Can you imagine walking in this boys shoes? Seeing a man get out of his car with a GUN.. then chasing after you? My heart goes out to his family after hearing him scream for help in the 911 calls. After the shot, it goes silent..

Racism or Not, Murder IS Murder.. Arrest Him!
